So who is pulling the purse strings? It should be no surprise in Shanghai that women are doing much of the buying. Figures show a large number of women now entering Shanghai tobacco shops, even if they’re not necessarily the ones lighting up. Daisy Dong, cigar dame at Westin Bund Center, Shanghai’s first official cigar shop, with over 10 years working the cigar retail scene shares her findings: “Many women come in to buy, often for the boyfriend or that boss or client.
They are very involved but might not buy for themselves.” Wang,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], noting Siglo Shanghai sales,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], finds 90 percent of customers ― male and female ― are true cigar aficionados, shopping for themselves. The remainder come in for gifts or out of curiosity. “Cigars are not for everyone,” notes Wang. “Many locals come into the store, try a smoke and find it’s simply not for them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whereas others are hooked at once. [I find] those who are only in it for the money or status don’t often stay long.”
A video of a two-year-old from the western Indonesian island of Sumatra chain-smoking has been viewed more than one billion times after it was posted on the internet last May. The child has since been treated for cigarette addiction under the care of the country’s child protection commission.
The commission said last September that the boy, Aldi Rizal, wholesale marlboro red cigarettes supplier, had overcome his nicotine addiction, but experts believe the case points to larger problems in regulating tobacco. But the country’s youngsters have little understanding of those dangers. Dimas Riyadi, a 15-year-old street child, wholesale marlboro cigarettes supplier, said smoking helped him to mix with his peers.
“All my friends smoke so it’s natural that I smoke too,” said Riyadi, who makes a living doing street performances for motorists at a busy intersection in the centre of the capital, Jakarta. “I have not been sick because of smoking,” he added. According to 2005 government research,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], almost US$20 billion was spent annually on health treatments related to smoking, three times more than what the state receives in cigarette taxes, said Mohamad.
We need further developments to maintain the momentum, and to ensure that there is a continuing focus on disadvantaged groups. There are also of course other challenges for prevention notably alcohol and obesity, although these will require some different approaches and a judicious mix of carrots and sticks. But in a year when health issues have had so much attention, it is timely to draw attention to tobacco control action as true health reform, wholesale marlboro cigarettes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a success story on the grand scale.
