Even as recently as eight weeks ago, a finish like this might have seemed unlikely for St. Edward's girls volleyball team.
But on Saturday at Redbird Arena, Lady Wave players happily took turns hoisting the Class 2A third-place trophy after defeating Princeton 25-22, 26-24.
"It's the best way--besides winning state--to finish my senior season," said outside Kristen Haggenjos, who had a match-high 12 kills. "Everyone played their part really, really well and we came together and did something that nobody thought we could."
After finishing 15-20 in 2007, St. Edward stood at 6-10 this fall after losing three of six matches at the Nike Preview tournament. Then the senior-dominated Lady Wave abruptly turned its season around.

St. Edward went 18-8 the rest of the way and swept through five state tournament games before a closely fought semifinal loss to eventual 2A champion Freeburg.
In the third-place match,Nike Sweet Classic Low, the Lady Wave trailed 24-23 late in Game 2 and faced the prospect of playing a decisive third game. But Haggenjos knotted the score with a kill, the Wave picked up a go-ahead point on a Princeton error and won the game on Rachael Varley's service ace.
Senior Katie Yohn added 10 kills for the winners while middle Leah Shaw had 12 kills for Princeton (28-11-2).
St. Edward's third-place finish is the best in school history. The 2004 Wave went 34-9 but finished fourth in Class A in its only previous state appearance
