Jonathan Powell Live At The Regal Rooms In London
Love Never Dies
A Talented performer
Not without a sense of the theatrical [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Scumaci moves into his second number. Angelically blue and again a tragic love tail with beautifully crafted wordplay; “Do you know how long I’ve cried…… to pull the freckles off my eyes.”
Opening Numbers
As he chants “who made the people cry… took a fall for the stars each night,” one cannot help but liken the out of work movie musician to the current plethora of jobless musicians in the capital today, and complete with passionate renderings that Scumaci has a direct empathy with them himself.
Recent artists to appear have included Jonathan Powell, Ruby Galliers [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ryan Lauder and The Lost Society, and they have all confimred to the venue's high standard. Matteo Scumaci's exhilirating and moving performance certainly doesn't disappoint the expectant audience.
His third and final number has a real touch of class, as Scumaci now takes his place at the piano. It is an old fashioned [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], slightly vaudevillian number telling the tale of a silent movie musician who has been put out of work by the onset of audio soundtracks in cinema. Written in the form of a letter from a pianist to Warner Brothers it is plain to see that Scumaci, as he sways up and down upon the keyboard, is an accomplished performer and a truly evocative songwriter.
The cosy first floor of the Distillers public house on Fulham Palace Road is where one can find the Regal Rooms and it is delightful setting for Matteo Scumaci to play his music. The organizers at the Bedford and Regal Rooms choose their music well.
Matteo sings solo with Les Paul guitar and opens with his noticeably Jeff Buckley like style. His opening number has a distinctly “Lilac Wine” or “Hallelujah” feel and Scumaci has a commanding vocal presence, effortlessly switching from full voice to falsetto. The smooth Blues tone of the Les Paul compliments the vocal exceptionally well. An ode to tragic love pondered upon during a hazy drunken hour, it is sublime and touching as are the Leonard Cohen- esque lyrics; “where are you going with that hole in your heart.”
A rare performer indeed and with such stirring renditions it is delight to see that there are real musicians still out there to be found. Matteo's debut album 'Electrical Lines' is available on itunes. For more information regarding dates and future releases visit
