Seattle – You wouldn’t think peach-flavored cigarillos would cause such a ruckus. Legislation to ban sales of kid-friendly tobacco products inspired fervent testimony from both supporters and opponents at a recent legislative hearing in Olympia. Public-health officials maintained that the brightly colored, flavored products start teens down a dark road to lifetime nicotine addiction.
But critics countered that banning the popular products would bankrupt some convenience stores, slash state revenue and stifle freedom of choice. Stephen Martin of Altadis USA, a tobacco manufacturer, accused lawmakers of an “irresponsible effort to promote your own personal crusade against tobacco.” He urged them to focus instead on underage drinking. “I challenge you to please cite one instance where a teenager was directly responsible for killing someone after consuming a flavored cigar or pipe tobacco.”
The bill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],marlboro cigarettes coupons, subject of testimony before the House Health Care & Wellness committee last week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], also would give local jurisdictions more control over tobacco sales. A hearing on a similar Senate bill was set for Monday. Tom Murray, associate vice president for health sciences research at Creighton, said the funds are important to his institution. “The tobacco settlement funds have allowed us to recruit and retain highly productive faculty that are making important discoveries that are improving human health,” he said.
Some of the research is starting to reach clinical stages where it can help people, he said. For example, discount marlboro cigarettes supplier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Janee Gelineau-van Waes is looking into a link between birth defects and contaminated tortillas and other corn-based food products. Recruiting and retaining such faculty members is a “brain gain” for Nebraska, said Murray, who came to Creighton from the University of Georgia. “I was very impressed with how progressive the state of Nebraska was with the use of their tobacco settlement funds,” he said.
“In my opinion they took a very enlightened approach.” Jordan Green, now a UNL researcher,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said the tobacco money was part of the grant package that brought him to Lincoln from the University of Wisconsin. His preliminary work with speech problems among people with Lou Gehrig’s disease led to a National Institutes of Health grant and other support, totaling $4.3 million.
“You can’t apply for large grant awards unless you have pilot data to show that your idea has some merit and is likely to produce some good results,” Green said. His group has published dozens of papers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], written chapters in scientific books and given presentations at scientific conferences.
