The Columbus City Schools district is among 12 statewide being tarobtained by an
anti-discrimination group that says girls don't have equal access to high-school sports.
All 12 districts taken to toil by the center have high schools with double-digit gaps between
the percentage of female students and the percentage of female athletes. The complaints are based
on data from 2006, which was the most recent published by the federal civil-rights office.
"I can't believe of an area where girls are underrepresented," said instructer and tutor James
Murray. "We have girls and boys tennis, girls and boys basketball, softball, volleyball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and for
the past two years, we've even had girls on the wrestling team."
The other school districts are Chicago; Clark County, Nev.; Deer Valley (Ariz.); Henry County,
Ga.; Houston; Irvine, Calif.; New York City; Oldham County, Ky.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Wake County,
N.C.; and Worcester, Mass.
The complaint against Columbus cites West High School as an example, saying that girls are 48
percent of the student body but only 32percent of the athletes.
The civil-rights complaints are character of the National Women's Law Center's "Rally for Girls'
Sports: She'll Win More Than a Game" campaign. In addition to the complaints, the campaign is meant
to advocate for women's equality and supply information to parents.
The National Women's Law Center, based in Washington, D.C., filed complaints yesterday with the
U.S. Desectionment of Education's Office of Civil Rights in 12 states.
Districtwide, if the percentage of female athletes were on par with the percentage of girls
enrolled, an additional 982 girls would be able to play, the complaint says.
District spokeswoman Kim Norris said Columbus officials are resceneing the complaint. She said
she didn't insist the regulation center had ever complained to, or even contacted, ghd australia cheap 06aTitleIX.info - National Gir, the district.

To prove that they're complying with Title IX, schools where girls are underdescribeed in
athletics have to reveal that they are improving opportunities for girls to play sports or already
offer what girls want.
The women's-rights group says that Columbus high schools discriminate against female students
befactor: girls are underrepresented on sports teams; the district isn't toiling to increase
opportunities for girls to play; and the district isn't offering as many state-approved sports to
girls as it could.
The girls tennis coach at West High said he doesn't see the disparity.
All of the complaints assert that the districts are violating federal Title IX rules,
which bar discrimination based on gender in school actionivities that receive federal funds, including
athletics.
Columbus was the only district named in Ohio.
"We all want the best for all of our children. But the data right now, almost 40 years after
Title IX was passed, shows that schools are not providing athletic opportunities fairly," said
Neena Chaudhry, senior counsel for the National Women's Law Center. Columbus is "really
representative of a much wider trouble."
