Kenneth Branagh, Judy Davis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron, Melanie Griffith, and Winona Ryder are amongst the performers in a film which concerns the diverging paths taken by a couple (Branagh and Davis) after they divorce. Branagh's character, Lee, becomes obsessed with fame, but his desperate attempts to secure his notoriety backfire on him. Most of Harry's personality is conveyed through several cut-away stories, dramatisations of his work. Robin Williams, as an actor whose face is constantly out of focus, and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, as an adulteress, are among the many high-profile actors who appear throughout the film, in addition to Judy Davis, delivering manic energy in her opening scenes.
Despite the positive tone of the film's message, Celebrity struggles through the immense disliking generated by Branagh's performance, his Lee seemingly having no sound emotional core, instead representing the very extremes of the immature, deluded male characters Allen himself has played with more sympathy.
Sweet And Lowdown (1999) was a rewrite of this idea, downscaling the concept to focus on Sean Penn's Emmet Ray, a 1930s jazz guitarist with few positive attributes (aside from his guitar skills) and a fascination with Django Reinhardt. Emmet revels in his destructive lifestyle, until he meets Hattie (Samantha Morton), a mute who perfectly fits Emmet's selfish, self-aggrandising manner.
Woody Allen therefore closed the 1990s as he had begun them, on the back of some challenging, adult films, albeit with some more escapist fare in between.
Woody Allen is a long-time fan of New Orleans jazz, and has played with his own band for several decades, taking on the clarinet. As he tells Stig Bjorkman, he has long held the dream of making a Jazz Age movie, but his idea was on too grand and expensive a scale for him to receive the necessary funding (Bjorkman, p347).
Both Penn and Morton were nominated for Academy Awards for the film [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which evokes a genuine sense of time and place, despite Allen's customary limited resources. Sweet And Lowdown was also the first of Allen's films to be photographed by Zhao Fei, a cinematographer who had come to prominence due to his work with Zhang Yimou on such films as Raise The Red Lantern. This results in a warm and often dramatic look to the film, in comparison to the occasionally distant work of Sven Nykvist [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who had shot the often cold Celebrity.
Deconstructing Harry (1997) brought Allen back to the neurotic camerawork of Husbands And Wives and the self-defeating emotional immaturity of Manhattan. The film centres around Harry Block (played Allen himself), a writer who is, unsurprisingly, suffering from writer's block.
The narrative is loose, its core concerning Harry's trip to receive a literary award. The book for which he is being celebrated is an intensely personal work, based on the lives of his closest family and friends. So thinly veiled are the characters, that Harry is faced with the repercussions of his revelations.
Deconstructing Harry proved Allen's most challenging and inventive film since Husbands And Wives, and he continued to buck convention by shooting his next film, the star-studded Celebrity, in black-and-white.
