Haiti police detains former president Baby Doc
Former Haitian President Jean Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who returned from France to the country on Sunday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was detained on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], police said."Baby Doc", who was deposed in 1986 after popular uprisings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], governed Haiti for 15 years with an iron fist.
He was detained by police agents in the Hotel Karibe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where he was staying with 15 of his inner circle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including security guards."Baby Doc" was interrogated for several hours in his hotel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and was escorted in a 4x4 van to the Port-au-Prince Police Station.Around 200 of his supporters gathered outside the station,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], waving the National Unity Party (NUP) red-black flag and threw stones despite the security operative.
Police arrived Tuesday morning at the Hotel Karibe just before a scheduled press conference by Duvalier to national and international media. His lawyer Reinold Georges also arrived and said there are no reasons to detained his client,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the government commented on this that "Baby Doc" is being interrogated for funds misappropriation during his mandate.
Since his arrival to Haiti several Human Rights organizations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International (AI) requested his detention for killing over 60,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 people during his rule. The return was surprising due to the situation the country is going through: the political crisis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the consequences of the Jan. 2010 earthquake and the cholera epidemic that started in October and has killed more than 4,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000.
Bulgaria will rebuild the barb fence along the border with Turkey to stop foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) coming from that country,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a senior official said here on Monday.Yordan Voynov,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], director general of the National Veterinary Service,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], told a press conference Bulgaria would request funding from the European Union to restore the fence on the Turkish border to prevent entry of wild and domestic animals on Bulgarian territory.
The announcement came after a second FMD outbreak was reported in Bulgaria on Monday. It is located in the small village Rezovo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just on the border with Turkey, where all animals would be culled - - some 200 cows, pigs, sheep and goats, Voynov said. The first FMD outbreak was reported last week in the village Kosti,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 30 km northwest of Rezovo. All 500 animals there were already culled.
There are over 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],100 FMD outbreaks in Turkey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said Sunday. The last case of FMD was found in Bulgaria in 1998.Bulgaria and Turkey share a 259-km-long border. During the Cold War 143 km of barb fence were built to protect the then member of the Warsaw Pact Bulgaria from its NATO neighbor Turkey. Bulgaria joined NATO in 2004, and most of this fence was removed.
