The Age of Migration
For ethnic Europeansglobalization is knitting together Europe’s
economies and politicsin turn creating a European identity. For
Europe’s Muslimshoweveraspects of globalizationfrom the
spread of Muslim global media to the rise in Muslim migration
are producing the opposite result. Rather than unitingglobaliza-
tion is dividing. It is too often encouraging a religious over a secu-
lar identity and forging dangerous fault lines in Europe’s fragile
experiment.
One of the most dif? cult problems wrought by globalization
continues to be the massive and rapid transplantation of foreign
cultures into the Old World. Waves of immigrants have been wash-
ing upon Europe’s shores since World War IIbut those waves are
likely to rise. The world is entering what Prof. Stephen Castles has
dubbed “the age of migration” a century in which demographic
trends have the potential to destabilize previously peaceful societ-
