Japan-based brand notebook vendors Toshiba,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sony and Fujitsu are all expected to increase the ratios of outsourced notebooks to Taiwan-based ODM makers in 2011 in order to strengthen their product competitiveness, according to sources at Taiwan notebook makers.
Toshiba is likely to increase the outsourcing ratio to 80-90% in 2011, as Sony will jack up the ratio to over 90%, the sources noted. Fujitsu will also raise the outsourcing ratio in 2011. Fujitsu‘s ratio of outsourced notebooks will reach about 50% in 2010, the sources noted.
Taiwan ODM makers Compal Electronics and Inventec each will receive 30-40% ODM orders to be released from Toshiba in 2011, while Quanta Computer and Pegatron Technology will receive 10-15% of Toshiba‘s orders each,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sources estimated.
Toshiba shipped nine million notebooks in the first half of 2010.
Meanwhile, Quanta will also obtain orders for 3.5-4 million notebooks from Sony in 2011, and Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Wistron each will see orders for 2-2.5 million units,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sources pointed out. Sony‘s notebook shipments totaled 3.6 million units in the first half of 2010.
In 2011, Fujitsu will continue to outsource notebook production to Quanta and Inventec,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and will add Wistron as a new supplier. However, Fujitsu is expected to outsource the majority of its notebook orders to Quanta with small volumes for Inventec and Wistron,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sources indicated. Fujitsu shipped 1.6 million notebooks in the first half of this year.
