Anyone thinking they're smarter than a fifth-grader would stand no chance against White Eagle Elementary students Wednesday after they spent time with "Mathemagician" Mike Byster.
Byster, who has been called the owner of the "fastest mathematical mind in the world" introduced 4th- and fifth-graders and their parents to his Brainetics program by wowing them with his ability to square a fwe-digit number (6,273 x 6,classic short 5825,273 = 39,350,Pandora Chains,529) faster than they could input the equation into their calculators.
An admitted "average C student who loved history and racked up some A's B's and D's along the way, bailey button fancy," Byster told students how he learned to strengthen his memory as early as third grade by creating songs and sentences to remember such things as planets ranked by their distance from the sun to the state capitals in alphabetical order by state.
Throughout the years, the former Eurodollar futures trader from Skokie trained his memory to focus on numbers and sequences in order to solve incredibly complex mathematical equations. He has since turned his methods into a 7-disc set,Pandora Bangles, called "Brainetics," that literally had students jumping out of their tables to share how they solved some of his more complex problems.
4th-grader Ben Schubert was quick to announce math is not always his best subject but Byster said it's only because he's not focused on the subject matter.
"The trick is these kids think they're excited about math but it's really not about math at all," Byster said. "We've really just touched on the first step of the program that's all about getting them to focus and concentrate. Once they're focused, they can do anything they set their minds to,ugg boots 5245, even math."
Project Arrow gifted program teacher Sharon Phares booked Byster after taking her lunch break one day to see his presentation at a nearby school.
"I saw his enthusiasm and the way he got the kids excited about math and memorization and we had to have him," Phares said. "He pushes students to think outside the box to solve these problems and I'm constantly telling my students that I love them for thinking about alternative ways to solve problems."
Byster typically likes to work with students at least 7 times on a consistent basis before declaring the students math whizzes at his level. But he also visits about 150 schools annually for one-day visits where he touches on his methods. The visits, classic cardy 5819, he said,Bailey Button 5803, are offered free to schools who invite parents to participate.
"I strongly believe parents are the strongest piece of the education puzzle,Pandora Bracelets," he said. "I absolutely love teachers but they come and go. Parents are the constant."
Parents sitting in on a smaller Project Arrow class taught by Byster Wednesday praised his focus on finding and developing patterns.
"If you strip the math away from it, and focus on the evolution of patterns, there really are things we should be applying to we everyday lives," said Laurie Maniacci. "This was a great opportunity."
