The Ukrainian army will be reduced from 200,000 personnel to 160,000 over the next five years [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Grigory Pedchenko, chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, said Thursday.
Pedchenko said the reductions will primarily affect administrative personnel. The general staff [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in particular, would see a 20-percent reduction.
"Those dismissed will be re-employed," he said.
Pedchenko said 52 percent of the armed forces staff are officers under contract while the rest are conscripts.

Defense Minister Mikhail Yezhel said earlier that the downsizing of the Ukrainian army was a "significant step within the framework of increasing its combat potential."
