NFL: Heisman QBs [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Smith cut
On the day that 2008 Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford found out he will be the starting quarterback for the St. Louis Rams, Heisman winners [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Troy Smith found themselves looking for new teams.
It was cut-down Saturday in the NFL, with teams required to trim their rosters to 53 players.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 2004 Heisman winner from Southern Cal, was released by the Arizona Cardinals, who will open the season next Sunday with Derek Anderson at quarterback against Bradford and the Rams.
Smith, the 2006 Heisman winner from Ohio State, was cut by Baltimore after playing in 14 games over three seasons. The Ravens will open the season with two quarterbacks: starter Joe Flacco, the former Delaware QB from Audubon, Camden County, and Marc Bulger.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] had expected to get his chance this year after Kurt Warner retired,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he was replaced by Cleveland castoff Anderson in the third preseason game.
Bradford praised. Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said Bradford's starting role is "well deserved."
Former Eagle A.J. Feeley, whose injury gave the No. 1 overall draft pick the chance to take plenty of snaps in the preseason, and Thad Lewis are the backups.
Two new Giants. Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sage Rosenfels and running back Darius Reynaud passed their physicals Saturday, less than 24 hours after New York acquired the duo for future considerations.
Rosenfels, 32, has played in 32 regular-season games, with 12 starts in his first nine seasons. The Giants lost their backup when Jim Sorgi injured his shoulder in the preseason opener. Reynaud will return punts and kickoffs.
The Giants cut some ties to their 2008 Super Bowl championship team, waiving defensive tackle Jay Alford and offensive lineman Guy Whimper. They also waived quarterback Rhett Bomar, receiver Derek Hagan, and tight end Bear Pascoe.
Rookie Cowboys. Four undrafted rookies - safeties Barry Church and Danny McCray, fullback Chris Gronkowski, and offensive lineman Phil Costa - made the Dallas roster.
