ntI was sure I was on overload.
I couldn't believe God thought I could handle another baby so soon. A
short time before I was to deliver our second childDerian required
another heart surgery. Once againhe fought his way through surgery and
to a successful recovery.
Our son Connor was born in September. I had taken a leave from teaching
and had planned on returning the second trimester that school year. One
month before I was to return back to schoolwe took Derian to the
cardiologist for a checkup. He told us Derian would need to have yet
another heart surgery the following month. His words stungas we had
been told he would not need any more surgery. This would be his fourth
heart surgery in his seventeen-month life.
We were completely caught offguard by this. We had financially planned
for a three-month maternity leavebut now I would need to take another
month offunpaid. I had no sick days left. How were we going to afford
this? How were we going to care for a newborn and Derian at the same
time? How many surgeries could his little heart take? And always the
underlying question of him being able to fight through it. We were scared.
