Chamomile can be used to prevent dandruff and soothe an irritated scalp. The Reader’s Digest book suggests a recipe for a quick, homemade herbal shampoo. Simply add two tablespoons of a strong herbal decoction to mild baby shampoo. To make a chamomile decoction, simmer one ounce of dried chamomile in two and half cups of distilled water for about 30 minutes. Strain, cool and add to a bottle of shampoo or use as a hair rinse.

Chamomile is a soothing herb, which makes it a good choice for use on the skin. Warm, herbal baths are made more relaxing with the addition of chamomile. Chamomile has also been used to ease many skin conditions, including acne, dilated veins and sunburn. The authors of Herbs, Health & Cookery suggest that chamomile is an essential addition to a facial steam.
Fans of Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit will remember that Peter’s mom gave him chamomile tea when he came home after gorging in Mr. McGregor’s garden. Rather than simply being a cute addition to the story, the author likely knew that chamomile tea has traditionally been used to aid digestion after heavy meals.
Chamomile is a readily available herb. It’s found in the herbal tea section of most grocery stores. This herb has many practical uses and is a helpful herb to keep stocked at home. Use chamomile to help with an upset stomach, for hair care and as a soothing addition to skin care.
