Remembering Happy
The rain steadily poured outside. I stared out of my window, longing to go out and let the rain wash away my fears, regrets and pain. I watched as a car drove past. I sped down the street as the rain pounded the car. I suddenly felt dizzy. I remember sitting down on the floor, then everything wen black.
~~~~~~~~~
I woke up slowly, my eyes adjusted to my surroundings. I was in my dad's car. He was at the wheel and my mom and brother were singing songs. My brother. Six years old, brown hair, green eyes and the happiest kid in the world. He annoyed me everyday but I loved him so much. My mom. Beautiful, golden brown hair and caring blue eyes. She knew what to say no matter what kind of trouble I had. My dad. The man who taught me to be strong. Dark brown hair and light green eyes that were also Lie detectors. He looked in the rear view mirror and winked at me. I closed my eyes again, listening to the rain hit the roof of the car. My mom and brother began singing Old McDonald Had A Farm. I smiled at how off-key they were.
"C'mon honey! Sing with us." My mom said, smiling. I groaned out loud best sexy lingerie dress, but smiled anyway. I sang along, tickling my brother who laughed in between words. "Old McDonald had a farm- Dad Watch OUT!" I screamed as Semi-truck crossed into our lane and headed straight for us. Everything happened in slow motion. I saw my mom's face turn to pure horror and my brother yelled my name. My dad tried to swerve but it was to late. The Semi hit the front of our car. Everything went black.
I woke up on the side of the road. My vision was blurry. I could make out the semi and our mangled car stuck to the front of it. I looked for my family. I could make out a small body about ten feet from me. I tried to say something, anything but all that came out of my mouth was blood. I could feel it drip down the side of my face. Sirens sounded from far away. Help. Someone came to help us, to help my family. I say the white vehicle pull up and watched as people rushed out of the car. One of them came up to me and I blacked out.
I woke up in a white room. Fluorescent lights blinked above me. a pain shot through my head. I managed to bring my hand up to my head. I felt no hair, only cloth, a bandage. There was also a bandage on my cheek. A muffled noise came from my right. It became more clear.
"We're losing him! We've tried everything, but it's not working!"
I turned my head and instantly wish I hadn't. my brother was laying on a white hospitable bed, just like me. the only difference was that he looked like he was in a seizure. Nurses rushed around him trying to stop his seizure. I watched helplessly as his eyes rolled in the back of his head.
"Noah..." my voice was raw and barley came out as a whisper. I tried again, using all my strength to speak.
"Noah! Noah! Please Noah." My voice became louder. One of the nurses heard me. "Someone get her out of hear, now!" Another nurse came and started pushing mu bed out of the room.
"NO! Stop! Noah sexy costumes! Help him! He's dying, please!" I screamed as my bed rolled toward the door. I could hear his heart monitor slow. Each beat had a longer pause. I screamed his name more, yelling for him. Just before I was out of the room, Noah flat lined.
Two days later, and I was recovering well. The doctors told me that I had only a broken leg along with cuts and bruises. They wouldn't tell me about my mom and dad. My brother was already gone and I needed to know if at least they were okay. For another week I rested in the same bed. I was sure I would go insane if I didn't get out soon. Finally one of the doctors came up to me. She was a short lady with dark blond hair. Kind brown eyes. But those eyes, those eyes were full of sadness. I knew what she was going to tell me before she even sat down. Tears rolled down my face. Then she told me.
" We tried everything. Your mother died instantly from the impact and your father died on the way here. We're very sorry for your loss." She patted my hand then left my room. I cried to myself. I was alone. And I always will be.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I woke back up on my floor. This was the third time I passed out and had a flashback about that day. I wiped the tears from my face and stood back up. I went to the bathroom and took my medication.
"Scarlett! Get dressed. We're leaving in twenty!" my aunt called from downstairs. She is the only family I have left. After the accident she let me live with her. She was my mom's sister and she's just like my mom, in every way. She was making me come to some party her boss is throwing. I really didn't want to go. My idea of a good time is not going to a party full of boring adults who sip wine and eat with five different spoons and forks. I put on the dress she bought me. A Dark red spaghetti strapped dress that flowed down to my knees. It had a black rose design on it. I would have preferred jeans and a hoodie but my aunt said this party was fancy. I threw my hair into a high ponytail and let my bangs fall to the side. mascara and lip gloss, that was all I was doing. I walked downstairs to see my aunt waiting by the door. She looked at me then smiled.
"You look beautiful!" she said. I rolled my eyes.
"I don't see the reason for me to look so nice. It's all grownups right?"
"Uh, we should get going." she said quickly, trying to avoid the subject. Oh, great. now I understand. She's setting me up with some kid! Did I really seem that lonely?
We pulled up in front of a mansion. Well, that's a bit exaggerated but the house was huge. Cars were parked all the way down the long driveway. My aunt pulled ne car into the last spot. She got out of the car, I sat there.
"C'mon Scarlett. Your making this worse than it seems."
"I don't need a boyfriend Auntie! How could you do this!" she sighed.
"Your always so down, you don't even try to make friends and hanging out with me all the time is not good for your health. You need to get out more, have some fun!" She smiled again. I got out of the car and followed her to the front door. I stood behind her as she knocked on it. A man, who I guessed to be her boss, answered the door. They greeted each other with a friendly hug then the guy turned to me.
"You must be Scarlett waist training skirts, your aunt has told me a lot about you." I gave him a fake smile. "I bet." I said quietly. My aunt eyed me so U shut my mouth.
"Well Scarlett, I'm sure you don't want hang around a bunch of adults sexy clubwear, there is a separate party just for the teens in the lounge room upstairs. I'm sure you'll have fun." I thanked him then we went inside.
Holy Crap! This house is amazing! It looks so expensive and fragile I'm afraid to walk on the floor. I walk through a crowd of people trying to find my aunt. She disappeared the second she walked in and now I can't find her. I stopped in front of a stairway. I could hear loud music play from upstairs. I sit on the third step, there is no way I'm going up there. A few minutes later and I spot my aunt coming towards me. She sits next to me on the stairs.
"I know you miss your family, I miss them too but you can't go on like this forever Scarlett. You should be going out with friends, and having a boyfriend. maybe even staying out after curfew, like most teens are doing." I ignored her, maybe if I did it long enough we would leave. She sighed. "If you still don't want to be here, after an hour, we'll leave. Good enough?" She didn't wait for an answer, instead she got up and went back to the crowd. I sat there for a few more minutes, bored out of my mind. The music from upstairs was tempting me. I tried blocking it out but it only became louder, calling for me to go up the stairs. Then I gave up.
I stood, smoothed my dress the went up the stairs.
The stairs opened to a large room full of teens. Strobe lights and loud music blasted around me. I didn't expect so many other kids to be here. I pushed through the crowd toward a hallway. People bumped into me while they dance. I felt like a rag doll getting tossed around. I made it to the hallway and looked for a bathroom. It was at the end of the hall and currently unoccupied. I quickly stepped in and closed the door. The bathroom was nice. It was decorated nice and there were even fancy looking towels hanging by the sink. I looked in the mirror. Who is that? The girl looking back at me? That girl with the sad face, who didn't remember what happy felt like.. She looked like a girl who lost even more than her family, who watched her own brother die. I heard a knock on the door and jumped.
"Hey! Are you done in there?" called a voice from behind the door.
"Yeah." I opened the door and walked out. How can my aunt expect me to have a good time when my family is buried in the dirt. I took a deep breath then walk back into the mass of people.
It had only been a half an hour. Time was going by so slowly. I walked over to the table full of food and drinks. I grabbed a cup f soda. A tall, blond girl in a silver mini dress came up to me.
" Are you Jillian's niece?" she asked. She had a very light voice.
"Um, yeah, Scarlett." Her eyes widened and she grabbed my hand.
"My dad told me all about what happened to you. I'm very sorry."
"It's okay." I said even though I find it very annoying when people apologize for things like that. There isn't a point unless you caused it to happen. She brightened back up and smiled. God, she has perfect teeth.
"Why don't you come hang out with me and my friends, sound good?" What the heck. Might as well.
"Sounds good." she pulled me to another room that had like five other girls in it. They were all chatting and laughing, until I walked in. Then they stared at me with 'What is she doing here?' faces.
"Everyone this is Scarlett, Jillian's niece." There faces changed from disgust to sympathy then ridiculous happiness.
The blond girl, who hasn't said her name yet, introduces everyone.
"This Jessica, Marrie, Lauren, Hailey, Beth, Sarah, Gigi and I'm Britney." I didn't remember half of their names but I smiled and waved anyway. " Why don't we give our new friend here a makeover." said one of the girls. They all agreed but I shook my head. "No thanks, I don't need one."
"Do you really think you'll get a guy with a ponytail and lip gloss? You need way more than that." With that they all surrounded me, holding makeup and hair accessories. This was going to be a long night.
I sat on the bed, letting them "remodel" me. They all sat back, admiring their work. "Wow. You're hot!" said Jessica, or Beth, whatever her name was. I blushed. I had never really thought of myself as pretty.
"She is, but her hair needs... I don't know." said Britney. The others agreed. One girl piped up. "I have the perfect idea, but it involves a little cutting of your hair." she said like it was no big deal. I shot off the bed.
"That isn't necessary. You guys have done enough really." Britney came up behind me blocking my way from the door.
"Please! You'll look really pretty!"
"My hair is fine. I really need to go, so if you could move that would be much appreciated."
"Look, girl!" she said, surprising me with the strongest of her voice. She was angry, I could tell. All of her friends surrounded us, arms crossed, smirks plastered on their faces. I should have known this wasn't a good idea. "I don't know who you think you are! We offered to make you pretty and you say 'No'? Just because your family died in some 'tragic accident', doesn't mean you can-" she was cut off by some guy who walked in.
"Britney! What are you doing?" the guy rushed over to me.
"I didn't do anything to her! She-She...She-"
"She what?! Refused your stupid offer, so you decide to force her into it? I know what you were going to do. The same thing you did to the rest of them! Leave her alone Britney! " he said threateningly. Britney' face scrunched and she was red from anger. I avoided eye contact, afraid she would explode and attack me lkey:
