Although war films have a rich history of being nominated for many major awards, they have been mostly absent from the winner's circle in recent times.

If Academy members are as divided on Avatar as the critics are, District 9 will be a very common selection for those who felt that it did everything right that Avatar did wrong.

The only other science-fiction film nominated for Best Picture this year is also one of the only films that can realistically stand against Avatar's marketing dominance. The film also explores the themes of alien and human relations casting the humans in a less-than-positive light Air Max Lebron 8, but managed to avoid many of the cliches that Avatar has been criticized for using.
While the visuals in Avatar are universally agreed upon as being without par, the film has drawn a lot of criticism for the storyline which has been labeled as predictable and called a rehashing of films such as Dances With Wolves and Ferngully. Clearly benefitting from the newly expanded category, this nomination took many by surprise as the reviews were merely positive, not spectacular. Although it seems that Sandra Bullock's performance has put this movie above similar sports movies that did not receive this much attention, it is highly unlikely that The Blind Side will have what it takes to contend with the other films in this category.
