Stephens gave up medicine and became a celebrated ink manu-
facturer. The fragmentary manuscript which he quotes in the letter
survives; he omitted the last two lines––

When Wordsworth came to TownI brought Keats to himby his
Wordsworth’s desire. Keats expressed to me as we walked to Queen Anne
St East the greatestthe purestthe most unalloyed pleasure at the pro-
spect. Wordsworth received him kindlyand after a few minutes asked
him what he had been lately doing. I said he had just ?nished an exquisite
ode to Pan [the ‘Hymn to Pan’ in Endymion]and as he had not a copy I
begged Keats to repeat it––which he did inyilai:
