AU following situation in Egypt: AUC head,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The African Union (AU) is closely following the situation in Egypt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], AU Commission Chairperson Jean Ping said during a press conference ahead of the AU summit scheduled for Jan. 30-31.The AU “have been preoccupied to follow closely the situation in this country (Egypt),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” said Jean Ping.
But he said the AU is not currently in the position to take actions. “We cannot go in every country to do the job of the country,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” he said.“But if you have a crisis, then we (AU) are concerned and we have to give our opinion and take actions,” the AUC head said.
Tens of thousands of outraged people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], inspired by the Tunisian "Jasmine Revolution",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], took to streets in Egypt in the past four days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], asking Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the government to step down. The demonstration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], started peacefully on Tuesday afternoon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], turned into violence in the following days.
Egypt's cabinet officially resigned during a meeting on Saturday following President Mubarak's demand early in the day. But Mubarak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has been in office for 30 years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], refused to step down. The summit, to be held under the theme “Towards Greater Unity and Integration Through Shared Values”, will gather heads of state and government from AU member states to discuss issues including Africa’s integration as well as peace and security.
AU to form panel of heads of state to tackle Cote d'Ivoire crisis
The 53-nation African Union (AU) on Friday said it would form a panel of heads of state to tackle the post-election crisis in Cote d'Ivoire. On the eve of the AU summit, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz unveiled the decision to form a five-member crisis panel. The Mauritanian leader, who chairs the AU Peace and Security Council,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said he would also head the panel in efforts to break the impasse since the Nov. 28 presidential run-off.
Despite high expectations, the election failed to end the division in the West African country since the 2002-2003 civil war. Both incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Ouattara claimed the presidency after the polls. The AU,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in line with the international community including the United Nations, sent twice a high-level mission to Cote d'Ivoire to persuade Gbagbo to cede power to Ouattara,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who is widely recognized as the winner of the election.Gbagbo has refuged to surrender power despite the AU's repeated efforts.
Iran's first nuclear power plant to join national grid in April
Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, the first of its kind in the country,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is to join the national power grid in early April, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ali Akbar Salehi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Friday.Salehi had earlier said that the plant could join the national power grid sometime around mid-February.But he said Friday that having a safe facility is more important than rushing to the production stage, local satellite channel Press TV reported.
He rejected reports that computer systems in Bushehr had been infected by a virus called Stuxnet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saying the computer worm cannot go beyond personal computers and enter the facility's main systems.Commenting on some media reports that the U.S. and Israel were behind a cyber attack on Iranian computer installations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Salehi warned against the consequences of such attacks.
"If anything happens to a nuclear plant its repercussions will not be confined to one border and they should know better that such moves could affect them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too," he warned. The completion of the Bushehr nuclear power plant was first scheduled for 1999. But it was postponed several times amid mounting technological and financial challenges and pressure from the United States.
