A multinational software company plans to set up training programs in software engineering at two universities in China, marking what it says is the first time such a company has established a degree-granting program there.
The agreements between the Symbio group, the city government of Weihai, and the local branches of Shandong University and the Harbin Institute of Technology,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], call for establishing two university-level software institutes in Weihai, which is in the northeastern province of Shandong.
The Symbio Group, a provider of software outsourcing services, with offices in China and the United States, will work with the university and the institute to develop a four-year undergraduate program, a three-year graduate program, and shorter intensive training programs for students.
The curriculum will focus on technology skills, with an emphasis on problem solving. Graduates will receive a degree from their own university as well as from the new programs, to be called Symbio Software Institutes. University staff members, assisted by Symbio employees and professors hired from the United States, will teach the courses in person at first. Long-term plans also call for courses to be taught over the Internet.
Dean Stevens, general manager of Symbio's American operations, said some professors would come from among retired Chinese academics in the United States who are interested in returning to China.
The programs will begin in September with several hundred students at both universities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mr. Stevens said. He expected the number to grow to a total of 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 students within a few years. In addition to the two institutes, Symbio said, it will establish two centers for advanced research at the two universities, which will be staffed by faculty members and graduate students.
