The Highland Park girls basketball team received some attention last May when the school's administrators decided not to let the girls play in a Christmas tournament in Arizona in protest of the state's newly enforced state immigration laws.
Instead the Giants participated in the Windermere Prep Holiday Tournament last week in Orlando. Highland Park was unbeaten in the tournament and defeated Farragut (Tenn.) 46-43 in the title game. Briana Collier led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
"We had a really nice time and the girls played really well," said Highland Park coach Jolie Bechtel, whose team went 3-0. "All along it was just about being able to play somewhere, and it really didn't matter where. We were able to find another place to go and it turned out to be a really good situation."

Fresh off of a fourth-place finish at the Nike Challenge in Phoenix, No. 1 Bolingbrook (9-2) traveled to Cincinnati for the Bragging Rights Tournament. The Raiders went 2-0, defeating Nazareth Regional ( Brooklyn, N.Y.) 66-59, and Largo ( Upper Marlboro, Md.) 93-66.
Connecticut-bound Morgan Tuck scored 52 points in the tourney, while Tennessee-bound Ariel Massengale added 32.
No. 2 Young went 2-1 in Michigan during the Detroit Shootout and the Motor City Round Ball Classic.
No. 4 Fenwick defeated No. 6 Bartlett in the Dundee-Crown final. The tournament enforced the fourth-quarter,Nike Sweet Classic High, 30-point running clock. The Friars initiated the running clock in the opening game against Regina, and again in a semifinal against New Trier. The Friars had four girls in double-digit scoring in three of the games.
"We have a strong core of seniors and a nice mixture of underclassmen," Fenwick coach Dave Power said. "I thought late in the year we would be playing how we are now. I know we still haven't reached our potential. I look at the Christmas tournament as a mid-term exam and I have to give our kids an A-plus."
No. 7 Hillcrest defeated No. 8 Morgan Park for the Hillcrest Holiday Tournament title, the Hawks' second tourney title in a row. No. 11 Trinity defeated Stevenson in the Suburban Holiday Showcase title game after defeating No. 12 Proviso East last Tuesday. No. 17 Hersey defeated Waubonsie Valley in Wheaton North's Bill Neibch Falcon Classic. No. 18 Lincoln-Way East dominated the Medieval Classic,Jordan Mix, defeating Lincoln-Way North in the title game.
Hawking No. 400: Hillcrest coach John Maniatis will go for his 400th career win Thursday when the Hawks play Eisenhower. Maniatis has been coaching for 17 years, posting his best effort last season when his team took second place in Class 3A. The Hawks set a Hillcrest Holiday Tournament record for total points with 327 — 91 vs. Stagg; 83 vs. Rich Central; 84 vs. Homewood-Flossmoor and 69 vs. Morgan Park.
TOP PERFORMERS
Shannise Heady, Hillcrest: The junior guard led the Hawks to their second consecutive tournament title in Country Club Hills and was voted the Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row. She had 74 points (18.5 ppg), 23 rebounds, 26 assists and 14 steals in the tourney. Heady is averaging 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Morgan Tuck, Bolingbrook: Scored 52 points in two games during the Bragging Rights Tournament in Cincinnati.
Kyra Navarrete, Fenwick: Scored 45 points in semifinals and finals of the Dundee-Crown Tournament She made all-tournament along with teammates Sarah Williams and Kathleen Roche.
Megan Rogowski,Nike Blazer AC, Hersey: DePaul-bound senior scored 29 points in her team's 20-point win over Waubonsie Valley in the Wheaton North tourney title game.
Briana Collier, Highland Park: Averaged 13 points and 13 rebounds and was named tournament MVP in Florida.
