The Palestinians will not accept any compromise allowing Israel to extend moratorium on Jewish settlement building at the expense of a final future peace agreement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a senior official said Tuesday.
Yasser Abed Rabbo, a Palestinian negotiator, said any U.S.- Israeli deal to freeze settlement construction in the West Bank " will not be acceptable if it is to harm the essence of negotiations and the future of the Palestinian land."
Rabbo's remarks followed Israeli media reports that Washington, which re-launched the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks on Sept. 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had presented guarantees to Israel to convince it to extend the moratorium.
According to the reports, the U.S. assurances include allowing Israel to maintain security control in the eastern West Bank, which will make the borders between the future Palestinian state and Jordan.
"This means restricting the peace process and the negotiations and making concessions at the expense of the Palestinian land," Abed Rabbo told Voice of Palestine radio.
On Saturday, the Palestinian leadership said the negotiations that have been stalled for nearly two years will not move on as long as Israel doesn't renew the partial freeze on settlement activities.
The final Palestinian decision over the negotiations would be announced after a consultative meeting of the Arab League (AL) on Friday. The U.S. is pressuring the two sides to continue the discussions.
