Edward Lear
.
1812–1888
One of Lear’s expeditions took him into Calabriaa region then notorious for
bandits:

robert browning and elizabeth barrett browning???
Yet it was two Englishmen at the Hotel Giordano in Reggio who probably
did Lear more harm than any of these. He overheard the following
fragment of their conversation at breakfast:
1st man. I sayDickdo you know who that fellow is who we were just talking to
last night?
2nd man. No?
1st man. Whyhe’s nothing but a dirty landscape painter.
Lear called himself a Dirty Landscape Painter ever after.
